About the project
Cal Events pulls together 9 Berkeley campus feeds (department seminars, student org events, athletics, arts, and more) into one searchable page. Instead of hunting through different calendars from different schools and research centres, you type what you're looking for in plain English and it figures out what you mean. Akhil built it because he kept missing cool talks happening 200 feet away.
Under the hood
React 19, TypeScript, Vite, and Tailwind CSS, deployed on Vercel. Python scripts scrape and normalize the 9 event sources into a static JSON index rebuilt daily via GitHub Actions. Search runs entirely client-side using a field-differentiated inverted index with stemming, synonym expansion, and a Fuse.js fuzzy fallback. Gemini 2.5 Flash with Google Search grounding surfaces long-tail events the structured feeds miss.
